India on Tuesday welcomed the ceasefire agreement between Iran and Israel and expressed concern over the escalating conflict in West Asia. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said it had been closely monitoring overnight developments, including the United States’ strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities and Iran’s retaliatory attacks on US military bases in Qatar.
In an official statement, the MEA said, “While we remain deeply concerned about the prospects for overall and sustained regional security and stability, we welcome reports of a ceasefire between Iran and Israel and the role played by the US and Qatar in bringing it about.” The ministry reiterated that dialogue and diplomacy are essential to address and resolve the multiple conflicts in the region.
The ceasefire was announced on Tuesday by US President Donald Trump through posts on his Truth Social platform. He said, “It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE... for 12 hours... at which point the War will be considered, ENDED.” He further said the war could have lasted for years but now stood resolved with mutual agreement.
Shortly after the ceasefire took effect, both Iran and Israel accused each other of violations. Israel claimed it intercepted missiles launched by Iran after the ceasefire had started, while Iran denied firing any new missiles. Trump later issued a warning to Israel, stating, “ISRAEL. DO NOT DROP THOSE BOMBS. IF YOU DO IT IS A MAJOR VIOLATION. BRING YOUR PILOTS HOME, NOW!”
India stated that it stands ready to play its part in efforts toward long-term peace and stability in the region. “We wish to reiterate that there is no alternative to dialogue and diplomacy... India stands ready to play its part in these efforts and hopes that all concerned parties will work towards sustained peace and stability,” the MEA release added.
